Who's Your Swami?

As part of my interest in giving my opinion, I like to give tidbits of fashion advice to others. I love to go shopping with my mom and older sister to push the comfort zone of their fashion boundaries and root through their closets to veto certain pieces. Sometimes they listen to me.

Recently vetoed items:
A penguin cap on my sister and a geometric-print vest in Mom's closet. I don't think they're getting rid of either of them.

In preparation for my mom’s recent trip to Las Vegas the three of us visited the Lane Bryant at Valley View Mall in Dallas armed with coupons and discounts to do some major damage. We left with a boatload of clothes, including some leggings and tunics for my mom and a printed cami for my sister. My mom fought me the whole way on the leggings, but once she put them on she looked great! She paired the leggings with a floral tunic from Lane Bryant and zippered flats from Payless to complete one Vegas outfit. Prints are a big step for my sister whose closet is comprised of blacks, grays and leafy greens, so I was proud to see her go for a print in black, pink and an army green.

Color Theory:
The Rachel color theory states that any colors that would look good together in a print you can wear in separate pieces.

I’ve been encouraging a coworker to expand her horizons in regards to color. It all started over a pinky-red crop cardigan that she claimed she couldn’t wear. I told her to pair it with her camel-colored tank and black slacks. She isn’t comfortable wearing three colors together yet, so she wore it over the camel tank and camel-colored slacks; a good step in the right direction.

I’ve been wanting a bright yellow bag for some time now, and I finally spotted one I liked that was a reasonable price a couple of weeks ago. At $25 on clearance at Lane Bryant (and really free because I was returning another purchase), I couldn’t pass it up. So what could I possibly wear a yellow bag with? I’m glad you asked, here’s a sample of some pieces I’d pair it with.

Bag: Lane Bryant clearance $25, regular price $49.50
Cami: Fashion to Figure $25
T-shirt: Old Navy clearance $8, regular price $16.50
Skirt: Forever 21 $22.80
Dress: Torrid $58

  1. I have a bright yellow bag that I got for free too! The problem is, it's Ed Hardy, and one side of it looks like a Carnie's arm.... oh well! It's still fun!

Now...you must take me shopping some day girly! I have the same problem as your sister (minus the penguin hat). No color in my closet!

  2. 1. OK, if you happen to see another of those yellow bags at $25 I will BEG you to get it for me. BEG I will pay shipping and get you something pretty.

    2. I'm kind of scared of Ashley's cami but I'm in LOVE with your mom's look. I bet that tunic looks FANTASTIC on her!!! Good for you for having them try something new. Beautiful girls deserve beautiful things :)

Can't wait to see future blog posts!

  4. I'm a little scared of the shirt too; I have yet to wear it out in public. Gary has nicknamed it my "kiwi vomit" shirt.

Also, I have to object; my wardrobe is now very colorful, including many shades of blue, green, purple, and now even red and yellow. True, though, I don't own many prints.

BTW, I love the penguin hat, and I will be wearing it all winter long.

  5. Michelle - I was able to find the bag at a store near Kevin's apartment that has it and I'm picking it up tomorrow for you! Still on sale for $25!
