Brown Paper Packages

This weekend Kevin and I went to visit some friends and their 10-month-old baby boy. He’s adorable with his curly hair and his mom’s blue eyes. Every time we’re over there I can’t help but notice their wedding photos framed in the living room. One close-up of her on the mantle caught my eye this time. Everything about it is classic and elegant, from the black and white, her dress and veil to her string of pearls.

I have a pearl necklace my mom gave to me for Christmas a few years ago, and it's one of my favorite things - like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens. Also like brown paper packages tied up with string. I know the classic strand of pearls isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so I’ve compiled a few items to show how you can modernize the timeless pearl.

I love, love everything about this cuff. From the twisted wire that looks like branches to the little crystals that give it a sparkle. Wear it with a bright-colored dress for a night out or dress up a tank top with this romantic accessory.

  • I'm into both headbands and hair flowers right now, so this headband ($10) combines the best of both worlds for me.
  • The addition of sparkles and little charms to this necklace ($50) keeps the accessory from becoming an overload of romance. The ribbon chain is perfect to soften the look of a leather jacket.
  • The pearled bib on the purple t-shirt ($44) means you don't even have to wear a necklace with this top! Pair it with jeans or crops for a casual look or pop a blazer or cardigan over it for the office.
  • In the words of Rachel Zoe, I DIE for these gloves ($42). They make me wish I had a convertible so I could wear them with the top down.
  • A black sheath dress and this clutch ($37) would set a the perfect tone for a romantic dinner.
  • Make a statement at the office in these pearly flats ($43) - also available in black - with a patterned pencil skirt and a structured blouse.
  • And finally, go a little native with some bling for your ankle in these sandals ($61). They'll go great with any tank and crops so you can show off your non Lindsay-inspired ankle bracelet.

  1. Comment from the peanut gallery: That bracelet is awesomely cute, but you have to be careful with that style...they have a tendency to fall apart on your really fast when the wire is that thin.

  2. Alright, I will admit it, I pretty much hate everything up there, but that's hardly surprising, since most of my clothing leans further towards androgyny than pearls and lace. However, the flower thing is especially terrible. Weren't you and I just talking about how much we hate to see giant flowers and bows on babies' heads? Why is this different? :P

  3. I love it! But she didn't brush her hair above the flower headband; what's up with that? You write so beautifully, maybe you should become a buyer for Niemans or write and design their catalogs, then you could also get a fab employee discount? Aunt Laura

  4. I can definitely see what you mean about the cuff. Maybe something more sturdy made out silver where the pearls are more protected and not at the end of each 'branch.' These are a little similar:

Ashley - yes, I DO hate big bowed and flowered baby headbands; I feel like they are making up for the fact that the baby doesn't have any hair. But I don't mind accessorizing with a floral pin or headband for me. I have hair. I love how blogger and Skorch Magazine founder Jessica Kane wore one here:
